At a pay phone, I saw a woman making a call,

and crouching at her feet, a large musical instrument in a black case, like a dog.

I think about the joy of clothing in the store window

that no one has bought, and the joy

of furniture that has not been sold,

but I also think about the sadness of the clothes and the furniture

and about their longing to be inside rooms with human beings

to sense the warmth of their bodies.

We remember the past

and God remembers the future.

Then we forget the past,

God forgets the future,

and the world returns to chaos.
